Thanksgiving Reflections

This time last year, we were scurrying to get our annual thanksgiving letter together. I had been working with Open Hand Ministries for about 3 months and was still getting the hang of things. I was struggling to get the address labels printed, the envelopes stamped, and the letters folded in time. This year, things are progressing more smoothly. Conveniently for me, being on schedule has allowed me to take some time to reflect on this past year, and in the holiday spirit, I’ve been thinking a lot about the things that I feel incredibly grateful for. So, I’d like to share my letter of thanks to OHM.

Dear Open Hand Ministries,

Thank you, first and foremost, for hiring me as your Communications Coordinator. This is my first “real” job out of college, and I’m so happy to be working for an organization that teaches me, supports me, and challenges me every day.

Thank you construction volunteers, who have managed to teach me, the least construction savvy human to ever enter a work site, how to sand drywall, caulk window sills, use a chop saw, and many other things I never imagined I’d be able to do.

Thank you to my Circles community, who give me space to recognize and break down my own stereotypes and perceptions. You’ve given me the tools and the support to continue working to become a better version of myself.

Thank you to the entire Open Hand Ministries community. My coworkers, my supervisors, the Board of Directors, the construction volunteers, the family development volunteers, and the circles folks, who came together, like families do, and offered me an abundance of love, strength, and support after the passing of my mother.

Thank you to Tammy, Michael, and Tim, who help make coming to work enjoyable. You keep work exciting, and I think anyone who can say they laugh at work each day is pretty fortunate.

This organization, and the people who make it all that it is, has given me a whole lot to be thankful for. My heart feels full and I am so grateful. Happy Thanksgiving, OHM.

With love and gratitude,
